Google’s Sheets canvas turns one sheet tab into an interactive task board, calendar or dashboard. Introduced on 13 August, it uses Gemini, Google’s AI assistant, to build the view from a written instruction.
Why it matters: A list of tasks, owners and deadlines can become a board grouped by status. You keep the data you already have and make the next step easier to see.
Changes in the canvas sync back to the spreadsheet, so it can help you manage the work as well as view it.
1. Make a copy of a small task list with four columns: Task, Owner, Due date and Status.
2. On a computer, open it in Google Sheets and choose Insert → Create a canvas.
3. Paste this prompt:
Build a simple project board from this tab. Group tasks by Status and show each task’s Owner and Due date. Keep the layout uncluttered and make overdue tasks easy to spot.
Check a few cards against the original rows before using the board.
Check access. Available in English for Google AI Pro and Ultra subscribers and eligible Workspace plans. If it’s missing, check your plan and your organisation’s access settings.
Work on a copy. Edits in the canvas can change the underlying sheet.
Our take: Start with a spreadsheet you already find frustrating. Keep the new view if it makes your next action clearer.
